A Place of the People. The Pamlico County Heritage Museum.

Ten years ago, in August of 2009, the Pamlico County Heritage Center opened its doors to the public.  Since its opening, the Center has served the public as the gathering place of the history and the traditions of Pamlico County.  With Pamlico County’s history being centered on half land and half water, the Center embraces the rich farming, fishing and forestry heritage of the area. In a place where the land and the water meet the sky, the Center is a story of how Pamlico County’s communities are adapted to its natural resources.

Serving as Pamlico County’s official Visitor Center, the Heritage Center is dedicated to the history of Pamlico County. Within the museum, artifacts related to the region’s major livelihoods; farming, fishing and forestry are displayed.  Exhibits on family life are also preserved, including displays of school memorabilia, stores, clothing and local activities.  Also displayed are mounted animals that are represented in the area and some far removed from Pamlico County. The Museum also has a large collection of genealogy materials and is open to researchers.

Outside of the Heritage Center, you will find Heritage Village which includes a working blacksmith shop, one-room school house, a “docked” shrimp boat and barber shop.  Each spring, the Heritage Center hosts Pamlico County Heritage Day within the village and includes a full day of interactive activities, music and food for young and old.

For over 50 years, the vision of preserving Pamlico County’s history, traditions and stories has been an accomplishment of hard work and community investment.  Today, the facility represents only the beginning of Pamlico County’s history.  With continued commitments to education, community sustainability and economic partnerships, the Heritage Center will continue to invest in preserving Pamlico County’s past, but also its future by continuing their commitment to the communities, the people and our way of life.

The Pamlico County Heritage Center is located at 10642 NC Hwy. 55, Grantsboro, NC 28529.  For more information, visit their website at www.pamlicocountyhistorymuseum.com or call 252-745-2239.
